Empirical Studies of Sentence Processing
نویسنده
چکیده
My PhD thesis concerns a recurrent neural network model which will be trained to comprehend and produce sentences drawn from a fairly large subset of English grammar. In order to validate and better understand the model, its performance will be compared to that of humans on a wide range of sentence processing tests. The purpose of this chapter is to summarize a variety of reliable empirical findings regarding sentence processing and to describe how the relevant syntactic structures and related constraints will be incorporated in the language on which the network will be trained.

Sentence Processing Among Native vs. Nonnative Speakers: Implications for Critical Period Hypothesis
The present study intended to investigate the processing behavior of 2 groups of L2 learners of English (high and mid in proficiency) and a group of English native speakers on English active and passive reduced relative clauses. Three sets of tasks, an offline task, and 2 online tasks were conducted. Results revealed that the high-proficiency group’s performance was the same as that of the nati...
متن کاملDo Heavy-NP Shift Phenomenon and Constituent Ordering in English Cause Sentence Processing Difficulty for EFL Learners?
Heavy-NP shift occurs when speakers prefer placing lengthy or “heavy” noun phrase direct objects in the clause-final position within a sentence rather than in the post-verbal position. Two experiments were conducted in this study, and their results suggested that having a long noun phrase affected the ordering of constituents (the noun phrase and prepositional phrase) by advanced Iranian EFL le...
متن کاملExperience and generalization in a connectionist model of Mandarin Chinese relative clause processing
Sentences containing relative clauses are well known to be difficult to comprehend, and they have long been an arena in which to investigate the role of working memory in language comprehension. However, recent work has suggested that relative clause processing is better described by ambiguity resolution processes than by limits on extrinsic working memory. We investigated these alternative vie...
متن کاملCanonicity Effect on Sentence Processing of Persian-speaking Broca’s Patients
Introduction: Fundamental notions of mapping hypothesis and canonicity were scrutinized in Persian-speaking aphasics. Methods: To this end, the performance of four age-, education-, and gender matched Persian-speaking Broca's patients and eight matched healthy controls in diverse complex structures were compared via the conduction of two tasks of syntactic comprehension and grammaticality jud...
متن کاملExamination of Sentence Processing with Continuous vs. Interrupted Presentation Paradigms
This paper presents three studies which examine the susceptibility of sentence processing to intrusion by extra-sentential target words in two on-line dual-task techniques commonly used to study sentence processing: the cross-modal continuous-sentence (CMCS) paradigm and the unimodal visual sentenceinterruption (UVSI) paradigm. It provides a direct empirical examination of issues raised by McKo...
